About Us

The DMC can be used by any full-time student in the Schools of Arts & Sciences and Engineering. The center is a non-academic facility open to students of all majors and enrolled in all courses. Students are welcome to work on both academic and non-academic projects.

The Digital Media Center comprises several full- and part-time professional staff, as well as trained student staff. In addition to the director there there are digital audio and digital video specialists, and a technical support specialist. Many levels of instruction are available for the students, from basic book/CD-based tutorials to staff-run demonstrations and workshops. Guest artists will be invited to display their work, offer seminars and master classes.

The DMC includes a lab area and digital music suite. The lab features high-end Dell and Apple computers, scanners and tablets. Lab software enables digital video editing, creation of transitions/effects, vector graphics, web site creation, animation, photo and image manipulation, 3-D modeling and virtual drawing and painting. Works of art can be burned to CD/DVD, published on a web server, or printed on photo or large format color printers.

The digital music suite contains a state-of-the art composition, recording and editing system complete with synthesizers, keyboards, effects processing and digital recording. After participating in prerequisite training, students can check-out video cameras, light and sound kits, cables, and assorted peripherals if they wish to work off-site. A well-appointed presentation room is available to students who wish to present their ideas and projects in a professional setting.

Our Mission Statement

The Digital Media Center is open to all full-time students enrolled in the Johns Hopkins University Schools of Arts and Sciences and Engineering.

The DMC enriches the academic and personal lives of JHU students by providing an interdisciplinary environment where art and technology merge. By promoting the use of emerging technologies in students' scholarly and creative works, we prepare life-long learners to confidently master new technologies and to disseminate works that effectively communicate their ideas.
